NEW YORK — Joey Logano reveled in the spotlight as he celebrated his latest NASCAR Cup Series triumph, proudly holding the championship trophy and capturing moments at iconic Manhattan locations.
Logano, who secured his third title on Sunday by fending off teammate Ryan Blaney during a thrilling finish at Phoenix Raceway, is now part of an elite group of drivers to have achieved this milestone.
Following the photo session at the Empire State Building, Logano shared insights with FOX Sports on various topics, including the dramatic racing accident involving a pace car and discussions about potential changes to the playoff format, given his surprising position in 15th place in the regular season standings. .
Reflecting on his celebrations, Logano said: “Once media obligations were fulfilled, I joined my team at a restaurant. We had a great time, reminiscing about the race and enjoying each other's company. Ryan Blaney's crew was also present, which made it even more special. I haven't been home yet and I can't wait.”
When asked what his celebrations were like this time around, especially with three kids in the mix, he responded, “Every championship is unique. This feels more meaningful due to the stronger bonds formed over the years with my team. As I grew up, I learned to appreciate sharing these moments with my family and friends even more. The memory of crossing the finish line with my children and wife is something I will cherish forever.”
Logano had previously highlighted the importance of a tire test earlier in the year at North Wilkesboro, indicating his desire for more testing opportunities. “As long as it's just for us, I'm all for it. We used to test weekly, so now that it's less frequent, it's exciting to have that option again.”
Regarding the unusual incident that occurred during the race in which the pace car collided with barrels, Logano admitted that he did not witness it firsthand. “I was informed that the pace car had hit the barrels and I couldn't believe it. I have never experienced a red flag situation due to a pace car accident before.
While Blaney acknowledged Logano's performance, he suggested that others in similar positions could have achieved the same result. Logano, however, believes every situation is different and highlighted the pressure of racing for the championship. “We executed a crucial restart and managed to fend off a charging Blaney. Teamwork and strategic planning were needed to be successful.”
When asked about social media reactions to the championship win, Logano noted: “I haven't spent a lot of time online. I focused on enjoying our celebrations and reflecting on the race. It's disconcerting to see mixed reactions to our playoff format after all these years. It seems like a double standard and I don't understand the sudden change in perception.”
Logano's lifelong dream of winning a Cup championship has exceeded his expectations. “The emotions are overwhelming from the moment you cross the finish line. Instant racing is unlike anything else. It's a unique experience that builds quickly, especially when you're surrounded by loved ones. It's the pinnacle of my career.”
With championships won at both Homestead and Phoenix, Logano expressed indifference regarding the location of future championship races. “What really matters is winning the championship. The rules and schedule are set from the beginning and it is up to us to execute our plan effectively.”
As for next season's playoffs, Logano wryly noted, “You should reconsider your choices after this year's success. But honestly, I'm just grateful to have the trophy.”
